Cold Sky

maneuvered
these roads
in February –
sister’s memorial service –
car sheathed in ice
winds swelling
mile after mile
see only
railroad tracks &
low wood
utility poles
burrowed in the dirt
pushing up
† † † † †
into
the cold sky –
2 weeks later
distant relative
draws a bath
slips in
& slits
his wrists –
now
late April
roads
hot & dry – 88 degrees
open flat prairie
cast in golden hue
w/ green patches –
listening to Sardines
singing “Running Wild” –
just into Kansas
on the way
to ready my sister’s
house for sale
driving behind
semi full of pigs
stench of
urine
brings
tears to my eyes
