Read by Anna Akhmatova, July 27, 1934.
The final toast
I drink to this ruined home,
To my evil life,
To our mutual loneliness,
And I drink to you—
To the lie from the lips that betrayed me,
To the deadly coldness of your eyes,
To the fact that the world is cruel and crude,
To the fact that God did not save us.
–Anna Akhmatova, translation by Jenny Wade
Poetry
After reading “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl
I pray for this ruined home
For my evil life,
To overcome the pain I feel alone,
And I pray for you as your wife—
I shun the deadly coldness of your eyes,
I forgive your lips that betrayed me,
I pray for this world so cruel and crude,
and accept that none but God can save me.
