Two Poems by Andrey Filimonov, translated by Anton Yakovlev

and

These poems were written in the mid-2010s in Siberia, in the ancient city of Tomsk, where it’s not such an easy task to fix a Mac. In fact, repairs of any kind tend to be a problem. Nineteenth-century houses tilt to the side like drunkards, and people in turn must drink to correct in their imaginations the crookedness of the surrounding world.

There was a time poets were, on balance, more interesting than pterodactyls
cawing in the painted sky
How steady everything was then
How sturdy
If bottles from Riga Black Balsam couldn’t be returned
they couldn’t be returned anywhere
not even in Riga
If a poet wasn’t published
they weren’t published anywhere, not for anything
Pterodactyls arrived in the morning after the stores opened
when pangs of conscience subsided
and arguments about future prospects began
There were no prospects
But that didn’t stop the arguments
The wind blew the arguments
from the factory of rubber shoes
from the factory of railroad ties
from the manufacturer of anti-anxiety mixtures
and from the liqueur and vodka distillery
The aroma of the industrial zone’s wind rose made the brain explode
Dizziness spirit-rapping logorrhea
Everything was too steady then
Too sturdy
One could get poisoned with water
Intoxicated with air
the pterodactyls feasted long into the night at one table with humans
in a wasteland
Even today
Dig a little and you’ll discover
the multicolored archeology of alcoholism

The Mac is humming and buzzing. Got to go to apple service
where a hipster is picking his nose with a screwdriver
in his overworked arms covered in Goan tattoos.
I complain: The Mac is buzzing like a Maidan protest, anxiously and meaninglessly.
Let’s take a look, he says, but first we must solve one internal problem.
Do you notice the smell of shit, as though you’re watching the news?
Someone has flushed their life down the toilet.
On Friday night it’s easier to find truth in an argument
between russkis and ukrainskis
than to find a sober plumber.
Sit down for a bit, skim some magazines.
Check out that motley pile of glamour in the corner.
Nyet mochi! Can’t stand it anymore!—a hipster from Vyshny Volochyok writes to the editor.
(Mochi is a fashionable Japanese treat
Hipsters can’t do without it.)
Time passes. The Mac buzzes. The stench grows stronger.
At last a specialist arrives
he’s over sixty
his tattoos are all symbols made in USSR—
a coat of arms with wheat stalks of barbed wire that encircle the planet
and the inscription “Thank you, Master!”
He says: did you hear about the execution in Arkansas?
The prisoner got three injections: one in the head, one in the throat, one in the heart. Fascists!
And what do you care?
I too killed my woman stomped on her with my boots but got out on probation after seven years.
You don’t value your motherland. America has fucked your brain with the internet.
Yes, I say, nyet mochi.
He snorts derisively and dives into the shit. Five minutes pass, a half hour, it gets darker, hipsters
meditate over the 16th Karmapa.
At last his head resurfaces. His eyes are hazy, his voice somber:
“The system is rotten to the core. The dead woman told the executed prisoner that nothing can be
fixed.”
Well then, I say. Let the Mac buzz. I’ll live with it.
We replaced the thermal paste and cleaned the cooling fan, says the tech support man.
Sadness will pass. We’re all mercurial illusions of the mind.
“Oh, fuck that!” says the specialist in shit and dives back. Into his native element.

он татуирован символикой made in USSR –
